Laser barcode scanners are products of good acceptance in Point of Sale and Inventory control applications. Characteristics: Good depth of field (from 4 to 24 inches) - This allows a user to read bar codes at a certain distance form the product, without picking up the item. Good scan rate ( from 35 to 200 lines per second ). - Allows the operation to have more customers per hour. Ease of operation ( Aim and shoot) - Training is trivial. Some can read defective bar codes - Usually some bare codes are washed out or damaged and generate difficulties during reading. Laser scanners with "stitching technology" make these problems disappear. Laser scanners with trigger and proximity (hands free) - Scanners with trigger are used when the operator has to manipulate the laser scanner and shoos only when required. Proximity laser scanners with a hands free operation speed up the operation because the user only gets the merchandise near the beam of light . When the scanner detects an object it turns itself automatically on. Interface: Keyboard wedge - It is connected between the keyboard and the computer. This is the most usual and easy interface. Serial port (RS232) - It is connected to the serial port COM1 or COM2 of a computer. Requires a power supply and software that enables the port. USB port / It is connected to the USB port of your computer that identifies the scanner automatically. Applications: Retail - Groceries, clothing stores, shoe stores, book stores, pharmacies, self service stores, hardware stores, among others. Inventory control - Because they have a good depth of field, they can be used in warehouses and storage facilities. Disadvantages: Resistance to Drops - Form the internal structure, these laser scanners have movable parts like mirrors, springs, and motors. During a drop these components may misalign. Price - Even though today the price of Laser Scanners is very low, when comparing them to other kind of scanners their price is a bit higher. Price Range: In Laser Scanners the price range oscillates between US$100.00 and US$300.00 depending on their characteristics.
